Overview

Our State Government Practice Group (SGPG) is seeking an experienced IT Management Consultant to lead and support technology management, IT strategy, modernization, governance, and operational improvement initiatives for our clients. This role will help state government organizations assess current IT capabilities, define practical target states, develop implementation roadmaps, and improve the management practices needed to deliver reliable, secure, and value-driven technology services. The ideal candidate will bring experience across IT strategy, IT governance, operating model design, process improvement, technology assessment, project management, and stakeholder engagement. You will assist future state government clients with:

  • Assessing IT services, processes, staffing models, governance structures, and technology portfolios to identify strengths, gaps, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Developing IT strategic plans, modernization roadmaps, operating model recommendations, and phased implementation plans that help clients move from current-state challenges to achievable future-state improvements.
  • Conducting IT management assessments that may include infrastructure, applications, service delivery, project delivery, cybersecurity, data management, vendor management, and IT financial management considerations.
  • Mapping and analyzing business and IT processes to identify opportunities to clarify roles, reduce manual effort, improve service quality, strengthen controls, and align technology work with agency priorities.
  • Collaborating with business and IT leaders to define priorities, evaluate trade-offs, align technology investments with business needs, and communicate recommendations in a clear and actionable manner.
  • Facilitating workshops, interviews, working sessions, governance discussions, and executive briefings with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Supporting technology selection, implementation planning, project oversight, and change management activities to help clients translate recommendations into practical execution steps.
  • Helping clients improve IT service management, portfolio management, governance, performance measurement, risk management, and decision-making practices across the IT organization.

You will bring a mix of exceptional organizational and self-management qualities, strong leadership capabilities, effective written and verbal communication skills, and a willingness to travel. The candidate filling this position can be located remotely, anywhere in the United States, or can be located in any one of our physical offices.

Travel Expectations

You should have experience working with client leadership, project teams, and technical stakeholders to plan and deliver IT management and modernization initiatives. The candidate filling this position must be able to support clients across multiple time zones and travel to client sites as project needs require.

Approximately 50% travel to client sites is anticipated to support future projects and will vary based on client needs and project assignments.

You Will

As an IT Management Consultant for our current and future state government IT department client projects, you will:

  • Lead and support the delivery of services to clients on time, within scope, and within budget, including assigning and managing staff and creating work products.
  • Serve as project manager and/or lead client projects across the country, supporting client work and deepening team knowledge.
  • Develop project deliverables for clients.
  • Lead and support the development of IT strategies, operating model recommendations, governance structures, process improvements, and implementation roadmaps that support organizational modernization.
  • Provide project leadership, quality review, and mentorship to project teams, helping apply sound consulting practices, structured analysis, and practical recommendations.
  • Stay current with public sector IT management practices, emerging technology trends, and industry frameworks, and evaluate their relevance to client environments.
  • Support business development activities, including proposal development, client presentations, and thought leadership.
  • Communicate project and delivery status to our clients, team members, and other stakeholders, including the facilitation of client meetings.
  • Work with BerryDunn contractors to help ensure their proper delivery of project deliverables.

As an SGPG team member, you will:

  • In partnership with our internal team, support business development and opportunity management activities to respond to state government IT department opportunities.
  • Participate in marketing and business development activities, including writing blog posts and participating in prospective client business development meetings.

You Have

  • 10+ years of experience in IT management, IT strategy, IT operations, technology modernization, enterprise architecture, or related roles.

  • Familiarity with IT governance, risk management, cybersecurity, data management, vendor management, compliance, and technology portfolio management practices.
  • Experience facilitating meetings and public speaking with large groups in person as well as in a virtual environment.
  • Ability to balance multiple assignments and achieve quality results in a timely manner.
