Overview

Are you a strategic storyteller who thrives on balancing structure with creativity?

BerryDunn is seeking a proactive, detail-oriented, and success-oriented Senior Proposal Writer to join our growing Business Development team. In this role, you will lead the development of high-impact proposals that help drive the firm’s growth—working collaboratively and aligning to best practices to craft compelling, compliant, and visually engaging content that reflects our firm’s value and culture.

Our ideal candidate will produce high quality documents that blend templated structure with custom messaging— someone who is organized and adaptable, with the confidence to navigate structured processes, as well as creativity to push boundaries. In this role, you will manage multiple priorities and deadlines with professional poise, communicate clearly and effectively, and continually seek feedback to improve work quality and efficiency.

This is more than just a writing role—it’s a chance to shape how BerryDunn tells its story, wins meaningful work, and makes a lasting impact for our clients. This position reports to a Business Development Senior Manager and can be based in our Portland, ME office, another BerryDunn location, or remotely in select cases.

If you’re curious, driven, and ready to help us grow, we’d love to hear from you.

You Will

  • Lead the development of compelling, compliant, high-quality proposals
  • Collaborate with proposal team members, subject matter experts, external partners/organizations, and internal departments to align on content needs and meet strict proposal deadlines
  • Analyze solicitation documents to interpret and guide proposal structure, response requirements, and proposal development scheduling
  • Review and refine content regularly to help ensure clarity, accuracy, and alignment with firm messaging
  • Actively manage multiple concurrent solicitations, each with unique requirements and a variety of parties involved in the proposal process
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to develop interview and presentation materials such as slide decks, letters, leave-behinds, and supporting documentation to ensure accessibility, usability, and brand consistency across formats
  • Facilitate debriefs and lesson-learned sessions with prospects and internal teams to inform future proposal strategies
  • Support opportunity identification and evaluation using procurement platforms and subscription tools
  • Conduct targeted research to inform proposal content and improve positioning in the competitive landscape
  • Manage and maintain the sales pipeline and proposal development processes using various technology tools, such as Salesforce, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook
  • Guide proposal delivery and production activities, providing support as needed
  • Occasionally assist in preparing for industry events, meetings, and conferences
  • Travel occasionally (less than 10%)

You Have

  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in English, journalism, communications, or a related field
  • At least 3 years of experience developing complex proposals, technical documents, grants, and/or articles, ideally within a professional services or government contracting environment
  • Exceptional writing, editing, organization, communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills, with a keen eye for detail and a strategic mindset
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment, balancing independent and collaborative work
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, analytical capabilities, and interpersonal comfortability, with a customer service mindset
  • Proven performance in project management, confidence in demonstrating leadership, and adaptability in navigating variable and nuanced proposal requirements
  • Resourcefulness in conducting research, gathering information, and solving problems
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft O365 applications (e.g., Word, Project, Visio, Excel, PowerPoint, Copilot) to be efficient in proposal processes and develop polished documents using built-in styles, branded templates, and style guidelines
  • Writing samples that demonstrate clarity, creativity, and strategic thinking, preferred
  • Familiarity or experience with InDesign or designing in Microsoft Word a plus
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and the ability to apply them in Microsoft Word and PDF documents when required a plus
  • Industry certifications, such as APMP or Shipley, preferred
